Just in case you live in a cave, here are both teaser trailers for Star Wars Episode VII

Cave dwellers aside, the entire planet has already seen the teaser trailers for Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens.....

....but still, I have to post them.  It's a new Star Wars movie, for crying out loud.

The newer of the two trailers features a voice-over from Mark Hamill, and a clip of Harrison Ford as Han Solo:

My favorite thing about this trailer?  The symbolism!  As a nerdy person who majored in English, I get super excited about symbolism!  The trailer begins with several highly dramatic images that refer to events in the original movies: a wrecked star destroyer, the melted Vader mask, and someone's (probably Luke's) mechanical hand resting on R2D2.  All of these images are scars left by past events.  It's possible

Another symbolic image is the handing over of the lightsaber.  This scene may mean something very different in the context of the movie, but here in the trailer it clearly suggests the passing of the torch. It indicates that another central theme of the movie will probably be that of older generations handing down knowledge, and relinquishing responsibility, to a younger generations.

Both of these are themes that will make it easier to tie newer movies in with the older movies and create a cohesive story line.  They could also help the audience adjust to the idea that Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia will not be the focus of the story going forward. This is a very good thing: people (and pop culture) are very attached to those characters, and the outcry in response to the release of the special editions--not to mention the prequels--demonstrated that the Star Wars fan base as a whole doesn't deal with change very well.  (Don't believe me? Try watching George Lucas Raped Our Childhood, or The People Versus George Lucas.  These are not people who are dealing with change very well. Seriously.)

Time to move on to the other teaser trailer, which was actually released earlier:

My favorite part of this trailer is the so-cute, roly-poly robot!  It looks like someone chopped off the head of a baby R2 unit, attached it to a soccer ball, and decorated it with orange stickers.  I just wanna grab it and give it a great big hug!  (If you want to read something containing actual thoughts on the roly-poly robot, try this: Let's Take A Deep Look At The Droid In The New Star Wars Trailer.  WARNING: it's pretty intense.)

  1. “It’s like I was drafted. Can you imagine if for some reason I said that I don’t think I want to do it? I would have all of you surrounding my house like villagers in a Frankenstein picture. Angry villagers, with lightsabers instead of torches." -Mark Hamill http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/star-wars-celebration-mark-hamill-talks-of-being-drafted-for-the-force-awakens/#/0
